Repentance – in commemoration of the “Al-Hurr Al-Reyahi”
Monday, 28.01.2008, 05:29pm (GMT)

Tonight, I would like to talk about “REPENTANCE” and how it is in connection to Hurr, who is our hero for tonight. Hurr who was the enemy of Imam Hussain but what made him come to repent and the way he repented, it is such the most perfect repentance. He has proved himself to all mankind over 1300 years which has no one can repent as him.

To begin, I am sure that we all know the meaning of the word “repentance” but let us all know the meaning together. It is the act of feeling sad, sorry and guilty for a sin or wrongdoing. The repentance or in Arabic as we say “Tawbah”, it is most noble and beloved of obedience in the eyes of Allah the Almighty the All Compassionate. He loves those who repent because the repentance has a status that no other form of worship has. This is why Allah is extremely happy when a servant repents just as a traveler is happy when he finds his lost mount in desert.

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Except those who repent, have faith and good deeds, those Allah will charge their sins for good deeds. Certainly Allah is  the most forgiving and merciful.” (Qur’an 25:70)

This is the greatest glad tiding for those who repent and combine their repentance with deep faith and good deeds. However, the repentance is to repent from the heart, to train the heart into obedience and to make a firm resolution never to commit a sin again.

Now this is the time for us to go through the story of Hurr. We will know all together how re regretted deeply ans truly for a sin he committed. He turned to Allah for forgiveness and he sacrificed himself even by his life.

Hurr son of Yazid Al Riyahi, the commander of Yazid’s regiment, who had obstructed Imam Hussain’s way near Kufa. He was also present in the enemy’s forces in karbala. After his arrival on the plain, he spent all his times in repenting and feeling guilty for having obstructed the way of Iman Hussain not to go back to where Imam Hussain came from. He kept blaming himself for bringing Imam Hussain to Karbala. And Karbala as we know, it is the place of our Holy Imam Hussain where he was killed!!

Allah is greatest. Allah always opens the right path and gives a chance to his slaves to correct themselves. So, on the morning of 10th Muharram, Hurr called his son secretly in his tent and said “O my son, we are doomed driven towards Hell!! There is yet time. I have decided to dash out of the ranks of Satan and join the side of Imam Hussain (Pbuh) and seek pardon of Imam Hussain (Pbuh)”. Hurr asked his son “would you like to accompany me to stay where you are? The son of Hurr readily consented to accompany his father and Hurr’s trustful slaves, they do so. They said “My Master, take us away from God’s cursed side, we will be with you and follow your command even to go for a death will never ever fear it. Please do not leave us for Hell!” Hurr agreed.

Hurr, with his son and trustful slaves, dashed out os the enemy’s ranks. After that, Hurr approached until he took a place ahead among the people then started to approach Imam Hussain little by little. One of his companions asked him “What do you want to do? Do you want to fight Imam Hussain?” Hurr began to tremble and answered “For God’s sake, Iam giving myself the choice between Heaven  and Hell. And by God, I will never choose but heaven even if Iam to be cut into pieces and burnt.

Brothers and sisters, from this, we all see how Hurr has a very true heart to repent and how he is obedient in the eyes of Allah. Surely, Allah the All Mighty the All Merciful forgives his sin. Please, Salawaat… Allahumasalli Wasalam Alaa Mohammed Waali Mohammed.

Hurr came to the Holy Imam Hussain with tears in his eyes. He begged his pardon for the wrong he had done. He said “O my Holy Imam, Iam so sorry for forcing you to come to Karbala. Please allow me to fight along with you.I would be honoured, if you would let me lay down my life first before anyone among you is killed. He continued bravely saying with a loyalty heart “I have brought my son to die with me to defend your sons. He then said with deep cry “Oh Lord! I turn to you in repentance for I frightened the hearts of your friends, the offspring of your Messenger. Oh Lord! Please give me the power to fight for you to fight for Imam Hussain.  Iam ready to die for Imam Hussain”.

The return of Hurr had already been foretold by Imam Hussain in his camp. Hurr was received very warmly by Imam Hussain and his companions as a special guest. Hurr was so amazed by the kindness of our Holy Imam. And when the fight against the devil began, Hurr was the first one who went into the firld against the enemy and charged bravely like a wolf among a herd of sheep and laid down his life, after killing more than forty (40) of enemies.

Imam Hussain rushed to him and found him with a big cut on his head and the wound was bleeding madly. Imam Hussain took his scarf which had belonged to his mother Fatima (Pbuh) and bandaged his wound and cleaned his eyes from blood. Hurr asked our Holy Imam in a low voice with short breathing “Did I do well, Oh the offspring of Prophet Mohammed? Are you satisfied with me?” The lasting Hurr heard before he died, it is how Imam Hussain was telling him “Your mother made the right choice by naming you ‘HURR’, the Free man. After hearing the reply from Imam Hussain, the smile appeared on this face of Hurr, he died with the happiness. Body of Hurr was carried by his tribe and buried.

Now, brothers and sisters, we have reached the end of the story of Hurr, who is our Hero tonight. He is the true free an as his name, who selects to do the right thing without fearing death but he fears Allah. And this is the most beautiful triumph for all mankind. I wish the story of Hurr will be the best lesson for us to guide us to repent sincerely to Allah.

I would like to thank you brothers and sisters tonight for your patience to me. And May Allah bless you all Inshallah.

Peace be on you, the noble Martyr Hurr Ibn Yazid Al mRiyahi. Peace be on you, the Master of Martyr of Al Hussain, son of Ali Ibn Abu Talib.

Salawat… Allahummasalli Wasalam Alaa Mohammed Waali Mohammed.
